You can find information regarding planning for this time, especially Black Friday and Cyber Monday, as far in advance as April. Practical Ecommerce claims that sales between Black Friday and Christmas make up 30% of all online sales for the year. Any advice you find will tell sellers to start planning early.
Here are some tips and tricks to make sure you have ample inventory ready for your Black Friday sales:
- Holidays are not the time to launch a new product. If you know that you want to sell phone cases for the holidays, launch those in the Spring or Summer. The last thing you need to worry about is whether or not a product will be successful, while managing all of your other orders.
- Solidify your listings ahead of time. Last minute shoppers rely on keywords and highly-ranked products. You should not be switching out keywords for optimization. One wrong word removal or addition could cause a product to fall in the rankings, and negatively affect your sales success.
- Add something for more product value. Shoppers love to purchase a product and get something extra. Sell slow cookers? Offer a free eBook of recipes. Phone cases? Offer a free microfiber cleaning cloth. This will help improve the value of your product, which is instrumental during this time.
- Double check promotional sales. If you are not used to running promotional sales during the holiday season, be sure to keep a close eye on inventory. You may want to reserve portions of your inventory for promotional sales versus organic sales. Also, be sure to calculate promotional sales in your Q4 inventory projections.
Amazon sent out a newsletter in October with some great advice for having a successful Q4. They even offer different tips for inventory success, management, and planning within your Seller Central account. They also offer some exceptional statistics on the 2014 holiday season: “On Cyber Monday, more than 16 million units were ordered worldwide from Amazon sellers.” How many units will you sell?
