In the last post titled Designing Your Product, we discussed how you could design a product from scratch or modify one of your existing products. We specifically discussed private labeling, the manufacturing process, Makerspaces, and freelancers. In this post, we are going focus on marketing, specifically how to make a good listing on Amazon.
Marketing strategy differs from industry to industry and from product to product, so there is really not a set in stone method to market your product. The same goes for Amazon. Some listings are short while others are long, and some listings have many pictures while others only have one. The point is that each product is usually different, so each listing will be different. If you are selling on Amazon, it is a good idea to examine the listing of a top selling product similar to your own and create a listing like it. Here are some tips on how to make a great Amazon listing.
1. Have a well designed listing
Good listings are very organized and well designed. They usually have a very concise product description near the top of the page followed by an in-depth product description in the middle of the page.
2. Use professional looking pictures of your product
Good listings have really good, high quality pictures. Photos of the product are usually taken by a professional photographer. Search for a professional photographer in your community and get some good pictures taken because pictures are important.
3. Consolidate product variations into one listing
You want to make sure that all the different colors and sizes of your product are under the same listing. Consolidating your listings is important because it means all your sales will come from one listing. Having one listing with many sales rather than numerous listings with less sales will result in a better Amazon rank.
4. Use bullet points
Make sure you use bullet points in your listing. Bullet points are useful because Amazon uses them as keywords that people might type in when searching for your product.
5. List your product in many sub-categories
Listing your product in multiple sub-categories is very good to do because it increases the chance consumers will find your product. This can be done when you create your listing.
6. Get good customer reviews
Customer reviews are extremely important. Make sure you are getting good customer reviews because they help determine your sales rank. Ask customers that have bought your product if they like it, and if they do, ask them to write a review. If customers have questions, it is usually a good idea to include them in the listing because other customers might have the same question.
8. When in doubt, hire a professional
Take the time to make a professional looking listing. If you do not have the time, hire a professional that designs web pages. They will usually do a great job. Having a professional looking Amazon listing usually separates the successful online companies from the unsuccessful ones.
