I’ve never sourced a product from China and found the process simple.
I used Alibaba.com to look for manufacturers that make soap molds. I decided that a soap mold was a decent idea because the bestselling items didn’t have a lot of reviews. I’m thinking ahead to using the Seller Labs product SnagShout to drive sales and reviews.
I used the Alibaba interface to send emails to a few suppliers. I used the template at the bottom of the email as a starting point. I customized it to the two types of soap molds I wanted to order. Not every supplier contacted me back, but a few did. I had to send a few response emails to clarify what I was asking for and to get final pricing. I eventually used PayPal to transfer the money for a sample.
I would never order a product from China without ordering a sample first. You don’t know what you’re going to get and it’s not easy to return merchandise. Luckily manufacturers can airfreight items cheaply. My two samples cost $35. They arrived within a week and half.
I was pleased with the two samples I received, but may only end up placing an order for one item. I’ve run the numbers, and it looks promising. But I’m hesitant to order a large amount because I prefer to test products before launching, even if I lose money. The great part about the $25K challenge is the ability to scale a product and process that works.
