🔐 Category and Brand Ungating: Getting Approval to Sell Restricted Products

Last updated: November 4, 2026

📋 Overview

You may find a product you want to sell, only to discover Amazon will not let your account create an offer for it. This guide explains how to identify the restriction, prepare evidence that matches Amazon’s request, submit an application in Seller Central, and handle the decision without trying to work around the gate.

🔎 What the restriction applies to

A selling restriction can apply to a category, brand, specific product, or combination of these. The restriction may be different for another seller or marketplace, so check the status for the exact ASIN and the account you intend to use before buying stock.

Category approval, brand approval, and ASIN restrictions

Category approval allows your account to offer eligible products in a category. Brand approval concerns products associated with a particular brand. An ASIN-level restriction applies to a specific catalog product and may remain even when you are approved to sell other items in the same category or brand.

These gates are separate from product classification. Do not change a product’s category, brand, or other listing attributes just to make the restriction disappear. The product must be represented accurately, and changing catalog data is not a substitute for approval.

Approval is not the same as Brand Registry

Brand Registry is a brand-management program; permission to sell a restricted branded product is a separate question. Being enrolled in Brand Registry does not, by itself, establish that your account is approved to resell every product carrying that brand. Likewise, a supplier’s authorization to sell a product does not guarantee Amazon will approve your application.

🧾 Prepare evidence that matches the request

Amazon’s application screen tells you what evidence it will accept for that restriction. Read the request before asking a supplier for paperwork or uploading documents. Requirements can differ by product and application, so do not rely on a document list from a different seller’s case.

Depending on what Amazon requests, your evidence may include a supplier invoice, a brand authorization document, product or packaging images, or product-compliance records. Submit only documents relevant to the application. A safety or compliance document is useful only when it addresses the product and requirement Amazon has identified.

Check documents before you upload them

  • Confirm that the document identifies the supplier and your purchasing business clearly enough for Amazon to review the transaction.
  • Check that the product description, brand, model, or other identifiers match the restricted product. If the invoice uses a supplier’s shorthand, gather supporting records that connect it to the ASIN.
  • Make sure the document is complete and readable. Do not edit, recreate, or alter an invoice or authorization letter to make it appear to meet a requirement.
  • Follow the application’s instructions for file type and document format. A retail receipt or order confirmation may not meet a request for a supplier invoice.
  • Keep the original paperwork and related purchase records. If Amazon asks for clarification, you should be able to trace the submitted evidence to the source.

For a brand restriction, ask the brand owner or your supplier for documentation that accurately describes your relationship and the products covered. Do not present a general supplier relationship as authorization for a brand if the document does not say that.

📝 Apply through the product restriction details

Use Seller Central to check the exact product and submit an application when Amazon offers that option. The labels and prompts can vary, so follow the instructions displayed for your account rather than relying on a remembered menu path.

1. Find the exact product

Search Seller Central’s product catalog using the ASIN or another reliable product identifier. Compare the product detail page with the item you plan to source, including brand, model, size, and condition. A similar-looking product or a different ASIN may have a different restriction.

Open the restriction or eligibility details shown for that product. Check whether Amazon is asking for category approval, brand approval, product-specific approval, or another requirement. If the product information does not match your item, stop and resolve the identity mismatch before applying.

2. Read the application instructions fully

Review the requested evidence, any product or condition limits, and the method for submitting documents. If the application asks for information you cannot provide truthfully, do not substitute unrelated paperwork or make unsupported claims. Confirm the requirement with the supplier or brand owner first.

3. Submit a complete application

Upload clear, unaltered documents and answer each question accurately. Make sure the files support the same product and business details stated in your application. If Amazon provides a text field, use it to explain relevant identifiers or document context, not to add claims you cannot substantiate.

4. Track the decision and follow the stated next step

Check the application status in Seller Central and read any response closely. If Amazon requests more information, provide the specific missing evidence through the stated process. If the application is denied, identify whether the problem was document quality, product mismatch, missing authorization, or an unmet requirement before deciding what to do next.

⚠️ Avoid common approval setbacks

Buying inventory before checking eligibility

A product can look eligible based on another seller’s offer and still be restricted for your account. Check the ASIN before placing a large order, and confirm that the restriction details match the product and condition you intend to sell. Approval is not guaranteed, so account for the possibility that you cannot list the stock.

Submitting paperwork for a different product or business

Supplier invoices may use internal product names or business details that do not obviously match your application. Sellers sometimes submit them anyway, hoping Amazon will infer the connection. Instead, gather legitimate supporting records that explain the match, or ask the supplier to correct an actual error in its documentation.

Repeatedly resubmitting the same incomplete application

A new submission does not fix a missing document or a mismatch in the existing evidence. Read the denial reason, address the stated gap, and apply again only when you have new, relevant information and the application allows another submission. Do not create a new seller account or use another account to bypass the restriction.

Treating an approval as broader than it is

After approval, check the specific product and offer you plan to create. Do not assume that permission for one ASIN, brand, condition, or marketplace automatically covers other products or selling contexts. If the restriction remains on another product, review its own eligibility details.

❓ FAQs

Can I list a product if another seller already sells it?

Not necessarily. Another seller’s offer does not confirm that your account is approved. Check the restriction details for the exact ASIN in your Seller Central account.

Does approval in one marketplace carry over to another?

Do not assume it does. Check the product’s eligibility in each marketplace where you plan to sell and follow the application requirements shown there.

Can I sell a different condition after approval?

Check the conditions permitted for the product in your account. Approval to sell one condition does not necessarily establish eligibility for another.

What if there is no application option?

Do not try to bypass the restriction by changing product details or selecting a different ASIN. Review the restriction information and contact Seller Support if you need clarification about the available process for that product.
