You already do the easy version. You download the FBA inventory file from Seller Central, drop it into Claude or ChatGPT, and ask what is about to run out. For a small catalog it is a good method.
The trouble is that you judged “easy” on the first upload. The twentieth is where the cost sits: the same download, the same explanation of the same columns, and a file that starts ageing the minute you download it.
There are three ways to put Amazon inventory data in front of an AI: upload report exports, build on Amazon’s Selling Partner API (SP-API) yourself, or connect an MCP server. Each is the easiest for somebody.
The one decision: two tests, in this order
Test 1, the gate. Does the route hold the report your question needs? If not, it is out for that question, however fast it is.
Test 2, the price. Checks per month × minutes per check ÷ 60 × what an hour of your time is worth. Add setup and upkeep. That is what the route costs you every month.
A worked example: 140 SKUs, two stock checks a week
Illustrative example
A seller has 140 SKUs in one marketplace and values an hour at $60. She checks stock on Mondays and Thursdays, which comes to 9 checks in a typical month. Every figure below is invented to show the method. Time your own.
Route 1, upload exports. Requesting and downloading three reports takes 12 minutes. Uploading them and re-explaining the columns takes 6. Spot-checking the answer against Seller Central takes 4. That makes 22 minutes per check.
9 × 22 = 198 minutes, or 3.3 hours. 3.3 × $60 = $198 a month. No setup.
Route 2, build on SP-API. Registering, authorizing, pulling reports and storing them where the AI can read them takes 24 hours. At her own rate that is 24 × $60 = $1,440, once. A hired developer costs more, so treat it as a floor. Upkeep runs 1.5 hours a month: 1.5 × $60 = $90. Each check now takes 3 minutes, so 9 × 3 = 27 minutes, which is 0.45 hours. 0.45 × $60 = $27.
$90 + $27 = $117 a month. Against uploads she saves $198 − $117 = $81 a month, so the build pays back in $1,440 ÷ $81 = 17.8 months.
Route 3, connect a hosted MCP server. Setup takes 15 minutes: 0.25 × $60 = $15, once. Her data then takes about 2 days to load, and she keeps uploading meanwhile. Each check takes 3 minutes, so the month costs the same $27 in time. Against uploads she saves $198 − $27 = $171 a month.
Now run the gate. Her Thursday question is “what does Amazon say I should send in?” That answer lives in Amazon’s Restock Inventory report, which is not among the tables the MCP server she is considering loads. On 4 Thursdays a month she still downloads one file: 4 × 8 = 32 minutes, or $32.
$171 − $32 = $139. That is the honest monthly figure, and $139 × 12 = $1,668 over a year. She holds $139 against the monthly price of the plan that includes the server, plus a Claude Pro or Max account if she lacks one. If those cost more and she wants nothing else from them, she keeps uploading.
Change one input and the answer flips. One check a month is 22 minutes, or $22. A build can’t beat that. On the MCP route the same check takes 3 minutes, or $3. In this example, then, any paid connection would have to cost her under $22 − $3 = $19 a month to win. That is her arithmetic, not anyone’s price. A check every working day is 22 × 22 = 484 minutes, about 8.07 hours, and 8.07 × $60 = $484 a month spent moving files.
The three routes, side by side
The third row describes the Seller Labs Amazon MCP, because it is the one this post can document. Run the same checks on any other server.
| Route | Setup | Upkeep | Freshness | What it can’t do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upload report exports | None. | The whole job repeats on every check. | As fresh as your download. Amazon’s SP-API documentation describes the FBA Manage Inventory, Restock Inventory and Stranded Inventory reports as “updated in near real-time.” | The Manage Inventory file is a snapshot of today. Past stock means a second download, the Inventory Ledger report. No sales or ad data unless you export those too. Anthropic’s help page “Upload files to Claude” allows 20 files per chat and warns that token limits may apply. |
| Build on SP-API yourself | Developer registration, a private app, self-authorization, then your own code and storage. | Yours. Amazon’s documentation requires rotating the app’s LWA credentials every 180 days. Miss the deadline and its calls return an error. | Whatever you schedule. Amazon lists a default of 2 requests per second for the FBA Inventory API’s getInventorySummaries call. | Nothing is prebuilt, including the place the AI queries. |
| Connect an MCP server (Seller Labs Amazon MCP) | Add a connector in Claude and sign in. The Seller Labs setup article puts that step at about two minutes; the product page says most accounts are connected in under 15 minutes. Then the data has to load, which the product page puts at about 2 days. | No code of your own. The vendor maintains the feeds. You pay for the plan that includes the server and need a Claude Pro or Max account. | Not real-time. The Seller Labs Data Dictionary lists the current FBA inventory table as synced twice a day, with a typical Amazon lag of about 1 day. | The Restock Inventory report, ledger detail and stranded inventory are not among the tables it loads. It has no tool for editing listings or prices. Amazon only. |
The gate: which route can answer which inventory question
Find your three most frequent inventory questions and read across.
| Your question | Upload exports | Seller Labs Amazon MCP |
|---|---|---|
| What is fulfillable, reserved, unsellable and inbound right now? | Yes: FBA Manage Inventory report, active listings only. The reserved breakdown is a second file, the FBA Reserved Inventory report. | Yes. Reserved is split three ways (customer orders, FC transfers, FC processing), and SKUs at zero stayed in the table on the account we checked. |
| What did I have on hand on a past date? | Not from the Manage Inventory file, which is today’s snapshot. Yes from a second report: Inventory Ledger, Summary View, requested for that date. | Yes, from daily snapshots. Don’t assume they reach back before the day you connected. Ask for the earliest date first. |
| What is aging, and how fast is it selling? | Yes: FBA Manage Inventory Health report | Yes: days of supply, weeks of cover, age buckets, and units shipped over 7, 30, 60 and 90 days. |
| What quantity and ship date does Amazon recommend? | Yes: Restock Inventory report | No. That report is not among the loaded tables. Claude can do its own arithmetic from stock, inbound and sales, and that is not Amazon’s recommendation. |
| Which exact event lost or damaged units, at which fulfillment center? | Yes: Inventory Ledger, Detailed View | No. The loaded ledger table is the daily summary per SKU, disposition and country. No single events, reason codes, reference IDs or fulfillment centers. |
| What is stranded, and why? | Yes: FBA Stranded Inventory report | No. No stranded table is loaded. The nearest proxy is stock above zero with no active listing. |
| Is ad spend going to SKUs that are about to run out? | Only if you also export ad reports and match the SKUs yourself | Yes. Inventory and advertising sit in the same database. |
The report names are the ones Amazon uses in its SP-API report documentation. Per that documentation, the Restock Inventory report “provides recommendations on products to restock, suggested order quantities, and reorder dates,” and the ledger’s Detailed View holds 18 months of inventory movements. A build of your own can request every inventory report in this table through SP-API (ad reports come from the separate Amazon Ads API), which is why it has no column.
The Seller Labs Amazon MCP column reflects the published Data Dictionary and a field-by-field check of one account in August 2026. The Data Dictionary describes the planning table as including Amazon restock recommendations. Its columns are Amazon’s alert and recommended action, with no ship quantity or ship date.
Three rows say the loaded tables don’t hold the answer. If your weekly question is one of them, plan on keeping a download in your routine, and ask Claude whether it can fetch that report before you count on it.
Where to get your own numbers
- Checks per month. Count the days last month you opened an inventory page to make a decision.
- Minutes per check. Time one, start to finish, including the wait for the report.
- Your hourly figure. Use what you would pay someone to do this job.
- The file. In Seller Central, go to Reports → Fulfillment, and under Inventory choose Manage FBA Inventory, then Request Download. That is the path the Nova Analytics (novadata.io) Seller Central reports guide gives as of October 2026. The Restock Inventory report sits under Inventory → Inventory Planning → Restock Inventory, or under Reports → Fulfillment in older layouts, per BreakThirty’s restock guide (November 2025). If a path has moved, search Seller Central for the report name.
Attach the file and paste this.
I’ve attached Amazon’s FBA Manage Inventory report, downloaded on [date]. For each SKU, show afn-fulfillable-quantity, afn-reserved-quantity, afn-unsellable-quantity, and the three inbound columns (working, shipped, receiving). Rank the SKUs from lowest to highest fulfillable units and mark every SKU at zero. Do not estimate sales or days of supply, because this file has no sales in it. Tell me which columns you used and how many rows you read.
Open the file once in a spreadsheet to see how many rows it has. If the AI’s count is short of that, it read part of the file. Don’t act on the ranking.
For the SP-API route, registration starts in Seller Central under Apps and Services → Develop Apps, per Amazon’s “Register as a Private SP-API Developer” page.
For the MCP route, follow the Seller Labs Knowledge Base article Connecting the Seller Labs Amazon MCP to Claude Web (Claude.ai). The connection is added inside Claude as a custom connector. It requires an active Seller Labs plan that includes the MCP, your Amazon marketplace connected in Seller Labs, and a Claude Pro or Max account. There is no API key. The server also works with ChatGPT, but the documented steps are the Claude ones.
Which route to check first
- Fewer than 4 checks a month, one marketplace: stay on uploads.
- Your main question is one of the three “No” rows: assume uploads or your own build until you have checked. Don’t pay for a connection whose tables don’t hold your answer.
- Weekly or more, and you want stock next to sales or ad spend: price an MCP server with Test 2.
- You need the data inside your own systems: SP-API. Get the quote in hours and work out the payback first.
When this breaks
The price ignores the cost of a wrong answer. An old file produces a confident reorder list from last week’s stock. So does a model that counts reserved units as available. On any route, compare 5 SKUs against Seller Central first.
Uploads break at size. Several marketplaces or 18 months of ledger detail can hit the token limits Anthropic’s page warns about.
The MCP route has its own limits. It is not real-time. It works only while your Seller Labs subscription is active. It covers 10 marketplaces, and Brazil is not one of them. On an account we checked in August 2026, orders reached back about 2 years and advertising 95 days at most. Treat that as one account’s result, not a promise. Ask Claude for the earliest date it has before you trust any trend. If a feed develops a gap, people at Seller Labs investigate and refill it where Amazon allows.
Check it with the Seller Labs Amazon MCP
These three prompts cover three of the four rows the table marks “Yes.” All three only read data.
Using fba_inventory, list every SKU with fulfillable units, the three reserved buckets (customer orders, FC transfers, FC processing), unsellable units, and inbound working, shipped and receiving. Keep SKUs with zero stock in the list. Report each marketplace separately, never sum across marketplaces. Tell me the report date of the rows you used.
Using fba_inventory_planning, list every SKU with under [your lead time plus a buffer] days of supply. Show days of supply, units shipped in the last 30 days, the alert and the recommended action. Report each marketplace separately, never sum across marketplaces. This is not Amazon’s Restock Inventory report, so do not present any number as Amazon’s recommended ship quantity or ship date.
Using fba_inventory_history, first tell me the earliest snapshot date you have for my account. Then show fulfillable units for [SKU] on the first day of each of the last 6 months. Report each marketplace separately, never sum across marketplaces. If a date has no snapshot, say so instead of estimating.
Frequently Asked Questions
Doesn’t Amazon have its own connector for Claude now?
Yes. Amazon announced its Selling Partner plugin at its Accelerate conference in September 2026. Per Amazon’s announcement, it is in beta with Claude for sellers in Amazon’s U.S. stores, connects in “roughly 60 seconds,” and covers inventory levels along with listing contributions, performance metrics and sales analytics. Actions need human approval. The announcement does not say which inventory reports it exposes, so put it through the gate table like any other route.
How fresh is the inventory data the AI sees?
An export is as fresh as your download. The Seller Labs Amazon MCP’s inventory table syncs twice a day, as the routes table shows, and traffic data such as sessions has run about 3 days behind when we checked. None of the three is a live feed.
Can an AI change my inventory or listings through these connections?
An uploaded file changes nothing in your account. The Seller Labs Amazon MCP has no tool for editing listings or prices, but it is not read-only: when you ask, it can change Sponsored Products bids, budgets and negative keywords, and update your COGS. Claude does nothing on its own. Read a prompt before you send it.
Running the same check across every SKU and marketplace
If you check weekly or more and your questions sit in the “Yes” rows, the Seller Labs Amazon MCP removes the download step: current FBA stock, daily snapshots, aging and days of supply, next to your orders and ad spend, per connected marketplace. It works while your Seller Labs subscription is active. Hold your monthly figure from Test 2 against the plan price before you decide.
