How to get Product Reviews on Amazon

In this post we will discuss some of the best practices associated with when are the best times to request product reviews. Please keep in mind, there is no universal approach to when you should request a product review. The timing depends on the product itself and your customer, among other factors. However, we are going to outline three common approaches as to when you should send a product review request, organized by the type of product you sell.

Some products you’d immediately solicit a review

Example: Phone cases, chargers
When to send an email? ASAP after delivery, or 2-3 days after delivery
Why? Since these are products most shoppers will use immediately, it is best to catch their initial reaction. With phone cases or charges, these are products your customer will try promptly. They either ordered it as a replacement, or they needed one as an extra. We recommend sending a product review request as soon as possible if you sell a product that is simple, easy to use and has one obvious function—does it work or not? Once your customer knows their phone charger or case works and meets expectations, they will likely be satisfied. By sending a review solicitation email at this moment will increase your chances of getting quality reviews and lots of them!

Products that need a week’s worth of testing before reviewing

Example: Headphones
When to send an email? 5-7 days after delivery
Why? Headphones and other lifestyle products take some time for your customer to fully experience before they can write a helpful product review. For example, with headphones you might want to allow your customer enough time to figure out if they sound good, if they are comfortable, how the battery life is, functionality with their devices, etc. Hence why we recommend allowing up to a week for any products that might require a bit more time to test before requesting a product review. Sending a request too early leaves it at risk to be disregarded since your customer may not have fully experienced the product just yet.

Products that need two to four weeks’ worth of testing before reviewing

Example: Supplements/Health and beauty products
When to send an email? 14 days – 30 days after delivery
Why? Supplements and other health and beauty product require longer wait times before you can ask for a product review. This is because it takes time for these kinds of products to start working. Requesting a product review too soon won’t allow your customer enough time to see the full effects of the product. We suggest requesting product reviews for these types of products two to four weeks after they have been delivered.

The takeaway

Knowing when to ask for a product review is dependent on the type of product you sell. Fully understanding your product and the realistic expectations of when your customer will use it can help inform you when you should send a follow up product review request. Again, please keep in mind there is no universal strategy when requesting product reviews. The examples provided were to give you context into which time frame you may fall into. If you are not sure where your product falls into these three categories, please feel free to reach out to our customer service team.
