Some of the staff here at Seller Labs will be taking a trip to the Canton Fair in China next month. The reason for the trip, largely, is just to educate ourselves about manufacturing and importing. We then will share what we have learned with our customers (and potential customers). For many sellers, sourcing products directly from the manufacturing capital of the world seems incredibly complicated. But most people we have spoken with who buy regularly from China tell us it’s quite easy.
We’ll be attending two out of Canton Fair‘s three phases, which is one of the largest product expos in the world. According to Wikipedia, it has more than 22,000 vendors and 165,000 attendees. The fair has three phases, each about a week long, with a week in between each phase. To make the most of our 10 days in China, we plan to attend the last two days of phase one and the first two days of phase two. During the week in between, we will be visiting factories and technology centers, as well as doing a little sightseeing with a three-day stay in Shanghai.
No one from our team has been to China before, so we decided to work with an experienced international travel agent to help us navigate the process. Our travel agent took care of the international flights, hotels, in-country travel, and some general tourist activities.
For more industry-specific activities, we were fortunate to learn that a fellow member of Four Athens, the local tech incubator we’re involved with, had lived in China and has many connections there, too. He has connected us to some incredible Chinese businesses, such as: Haxl8r (a hardware tech-accelerator) and Michael Michelini of the podcast Global From Asia.
Patrick from our $25k challenge will be traveling with us, in addition to a couple of e-commerce sellers. We’ll continue to post on our blog with more details of the trip, and we hope this will demystify much of the process about manufacturing and importing from China.
